We have full, legal custody of a teenage child; this is the daughter of a good friend of mine who passed away 5 years ago. It has been over a year now, since Abbi came to our family. How does this custody and adoption relate? At her age, we cannot see going through a year or two for adoption, but for her sake, we wonder if we should. What is involved since we already have full custody. Does anyone know?Last edited by kas1cnd : 12-30-2003 at 03:35 PM. |

It is not at all a dumb question. My advice is to check with a lawyer regarding the rights and responsibilities you would have if you leave the situation as it is or go with adoption. I believe the main difference would be that the child would be able to inherit from your estate if you adopt. Again, a consultation with an attorney is generally not too expensive and an attorney would be able to answer all of your questions. Something else to consider is what is in your heart, for which an attorney could not help you. Best of luck!
