Non-ID info for those with sealed records - OH law change
I have been searching for my birthparents for a while but I have always run into dead ends because I couldn't get my non-ID information because I was adopted through Ohio Children's Society, agency closed, records gone, and my adoption was finalized in 1964. I had some information from my adoptive parents but not enough. Apparently, a name isn't enough.
It appears as if there was recently a change in Ohio law: " Enacted Senate Bill 238 Requires the Release of Non-Identifying Adoption Records by Probate Court if a written request is submitted by an adoptee, regardless of when they were born" This was signed by Governor Taft June 21, 2006 and went into effect 90 days after that. I e-mailed the probate court in Franklin County and they told me "You need to send us a letter requesting what you are looking for and any information you know about your adoption. In the letter we must have your full name after the adoption, your parents full names, your date and place of birth and your date and place of adoption. Please include your current address and telephone number." They said it was usually about a 3 week turn around time. Holding my breath to see if I will now have enough information to continue my search. Lisa |

Lisa,
I hope your search goes well. Surely some agency or individual must have the original records for the Ohio Children's Society. I would hope it would be illegal to dispose of all that vital informaion. It took me a few weeks to track down the right agency where my records were because there had been changes in the 40 years since I was born. I searched using the original address and contacted the current occupant of that building who gave me two other agencies to check with. The lady was super nice and said she gets similar requests from other adoptees on a regular basis. The second person I was referred to was the right one. Good luck. Sheri |

Hope it works foryou!
I was told that I could send a letter to the probate courts in Pa. But there is no gaurentee that they will open our records. They told me to send 50$ to this judge in Pa., and then they will look into it, but they will not gaurentee that the records will be opened, and the money is not refundable! It sounded to fishy to me! But I hope you will find wht you are looking for! Good Luck!
