Searching in NC
Just wondered if anyone in NC had searched and found birth parent/s if so how did you do it. My husband and I have sometimes aggressively/ and others not tried to search for any of his birth family, but have just had no luck. He was adopted thru The Children's Home Society of NC in Greensboro, NC and we have is non-id info. There's nothing there of much help. I was told before to write Raleigh to request the original county where he was born. Seems at one time they were giving out this info but found out a lot of matches were being made so now will not give it out. They say it is identifying info. Have looked in a few months but there was a letter to the editor in News & Record about how the state should not be able to keep this info from adoptees. That without knowing who their family is they could end up marrying a close relative. I really never thought of it that way. I think they thought by not allowing you to be adopted by a family in the county in which you were born that would solve that problem, but people do move. I don't know how many times I have said "it's a small world!!"

searching in NC
Go to page 3 of this thread and find where lucadebrase has posted the NC birth index web adresses. Download it into Excel if you have it for your birth year and you can sort it by birth date. You can look for a match for all the non-id info you have. If you find a match you can find the county listed in the 5th column. (You'll have to go to the Exhibit no. for your year to find out what the code no. means.) Good luck. It worked for me!

Raleigh
dakota:
Did you ever receive any type of correspondence from Raleigh or did they just ignore you? I am asking because I mailed my request several weeks ago and have ahd no response. All I asked in the letter was for confirmation of the county in which I was born. To date : NOTHING!!!!! It would be nice to at least receive a letter from them telling me they are not going to tell me. Have you heard from anyone else that has requested this info? Thanks much, S |

Raleigh
It's been a while since I have requested any info from Raleigh but they did respond and I don't think it took that long to respond. If it has been a while i would try again, but don't get your hopes up on getting any info. They told me it was identifying info therefore they could not tell me

update
I did receive a letter from Raleigh referring me to the county agency which approved my adoption, which was the county where I was born.
Even before I rec'd the letter I had contacted the county and had received my non-id but if I had not already had some idea of what county to contact this letter would have given me the answer. Good luck to everyone ![]() S

I was given a list of registrys to sign up on but feel like I am running in circles. I cannot even find what county I was born in. If you find any loop holes please email me. cjbetterhalf@yahoo.com

Do you have your birth weight, mothers age, fathers age, or any other non id information. If so you can find yourself on the birth index. I will be glad to help you, just post your information and I will see what I can find.

I got a number and name for someone in raleigh that you can call she gave me the info over the phone within 30 seconds.
All I said is. Hello, I do not know what agency handled my adoption or what county I was born in. I am trying to obtain non-identifying information about my birth. Is there anyway you can help me please? She said hold on, asked me my birthdate and adoptive name and gave the county and what agency did the adoption over the phone. Might help.

The name of the person you need to call in Raleigh now is
Tammy Johnson Division of Socail Services 919 733-3801 Amelia Lance does not handle any of this any more. Tammy is very nice as Matt said. Call her and tell her you are wanting your non-id, but are not sure what county agency handled the adoption. North Carolina is starting to have a lot of organizations who will back change. The North Carolina Coalition for Adoption Reform is meeting with the North Carolina Region I Adoption Group in Statesville on January 13. We are going to let them know what our bill is proposing, and try to have them on board when we go to Raleigh in 2007. 2005 will be our year of educating the public and agencies. We need to have as many agencies behind us as possible when we go to Raleigh the next time. If anyone is interested, please go to http://adoptionreform-nc.org, and become a member of our organization and help us move forward. We also have someone who is interested in being a lobbyist for us in 2007. Roberta |
