You should first contact the adoption agency that facilitated the adoption to request background information (non-identifying information) about the birth parents. If the name of the agency involved in the adoption is unknown, contact this office: North Carolina State Division of Social Services 325 North Salisbury Street Raleigh, NC, 27603 For questions about access to adoption related information and records: North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Division of Social Services, Children's Services Section 2408 Mail Service Center Raleigh, NC 27699-2408 (919) 733-4622 Fax: (919) 715-6714 Obtaining Non-Identifying Information: Adopted adults age 21 or older, adoptive parents, or legal guardians may obtain non-identifying information. Birth parents or birth relative(s) may submit information about a health or genetic condition that may affect the adopted adult, and the appropriate employee shall make an effort to contact the adopted adult age 18 or older or the adoptive parents of an adoptee under 18. Obtaining Identifying Information: An adoptee must petition the court in which the adoption was finalized. You might check marriage records for the name that you have in the county where you were born. You might also check the Public Library in the county where you were born for "City Directories" around the years you were born. The City Directory will give you names of people and their address at the time. It is helpful because it will list other people living at the same address and you might be able to find a connection throught he birth mother's parents names or a name of a brother.

Can you help me with a hospital code?
I am an adoptee searching for my birth family. I was able to download the birth index and I think that I may have found a match, but I am unable to figure out the hospital code. The code number is 1I02370. If you could help me please, I would be greatly appriciative. Thanks!!!

Bait and switch
How can a person find out if the "birth county" has been changed on the amended birth certificate? Also, is it very difficult to get NC to unseal records if the courts are petitioned? I have some very good places to start looking, but I am afraid I'll be looking in the WRONG places by virtue of the county "bait and switch" offered by the state on the amended certificate. How can it NOT be an infringement of adoptee's rights to prevent them from viewing public records? Does NC have any legislation pending or current that addresses this issue?

The Birth County is ALWAYS changed on the amended birth certificate, to reflect the county the adoptive parents were living in when the adoption occured. Also, is it very difficult to get NC to unseal records if the courts are petitioned? Some folks within Guilford County have had success with petitioning the courts to give them access to their information. Within the rest of the counties, it is difficult to say the least. How can it NOT be an infringement of adoptee's rights to prevent them from viewing public records? Does NC have any legislation pending or current that addresses this issue. The NC Coalition for Adoption Reform is currently working on legislation to gain access to information for any adult adoptee or for the adoptive parent of any minor adoptee. njadoptee (or anyone else who has heard..) do you know on what basis the Guilford Co. folks were able to get access to their records? Was it just based on a desire to know about their genealogical past, or did they have to find more concrete reasons? I live in Guilford Co. and I've just started my search. I heard that petitioning the courts isn't always only a last resort, but I'm still a bit reluctant; going to court just seems so intimidating. Any advice? Thanks.

searching for birthparents. I was born 8/27/74 in NC
I requested my non-identifying info over a year ago. They keep telling me that when they sent the records to Raleigh to be microfiched last year, that they got all mixed up and can't exactly locate my record. I really have NO info at this point. Where do I start? Is there a search angel that can help me? Wilson County DSS was the agency - I don't know hospital only my dob 8/27/74 at 10:29 am. My weight was 6 pounds, 10 oz. Epilepsy and nearsightedness are in my background, but know nothing else
