Born in NY, possibly adopted out of state
Hello everyone,
I was born in NY on 12/3/1945, but was adopted to a family in Massachusetts. I know very little about my adoption, as nothing was ever shared with me. I have been searching high and low for information. I did search the NYC birth index and was able to find my birth name. I registered with the NY Adoption Registry, but after two searches in over a year, the vital statistics office has been unable to locate my file. I am now beginning to think that it is possible I was actually adopted in Massachusetts. In this case, which state would hold the records, NY or MA? Also, was it legal for adoptive parents to take a child over state lines before an adoption was finalized back then? Any information that can be offered on this would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance, Allan |

What state does your birth cert reflect? They allowed you to sign up with ny state registry? then you must have been adopted in ny state too. They seem to loose files in ny. What agency? Did you sign up with ISRR - International Soundex Reunion Registry and Adoption Registry - Records, Reunion Registries, Adoptees, Search Reunite please also post and put your info on nyadoptees : NY adoptees and birth parents.searching. sincerely, Joan |

aimarcus...these are shots in the dark...
At the time of a birth, there is a legal requirement that within a few days after the birth, there has to be a filing with the state regarding the birth. This sets up the personal data on the birth certificate. if you have a birth certificate from NY, ( either OBC, or amended) it means you were born in NY. It would be possible to have a birth and have it registered in NY, and then the child taken to MA for adoption. But the OBC will come from NY. If the adoption was carried out in MA, then MA will have records of the adoption, but not the OBC. The birth certificate should tell the story. I wish you the best.
