birth index for upstate NY
Is it true that the birth index in albany only contains birth certificates that have been on file for 75 years? I'm confused because I've heard that the birth index in NYC has info for all years in NYC but only for those born in NYC. I was born in upstate NY but don't know where to go for info. Does anyone know?

Indexes to the Vital Records of New York State
YES, there is the Vital Records birth indexes for upstate, and yes they are confidential for 75years, and they do NOT list people's birth certificate numbers on these indexes... they are quite different from what NYC has. But they DO exhist.
Kathy ksb1951@espernet.net ............................................... http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/genealogy/vitrec.htm Indexes to the Vital Records of New York State (except New York City) Microfiche copies of the Indexes to the vital records that are currently available to the public contain the following information: name, place, date, and certificate number. The Indexes are currently available upstate only at the New York State Archives, 3rd Floor, Cultural Education Center, Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY 12230, 518-474-8955; and Rochester Public Library, 115 South Avenue, Rochester, NY 14604, 716-428-8440. Indexes at the State Archives in Albany can be used from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The Department of Health's Bureau of Vital Records no longer provides access to the microfiche Indexes by appointment. The National Archives and Records Administration's Northeast Region office in New York City (201 Varick Street, New York, NY 10014-4811, 212-401-1620) also has the Indexes. Vital Records Services - New York State Department of Health http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/consumer/vr.htm Vital Records Indexes New York began statewide registration of births, marriages, and deaths in 1880- 81. (New York City and a few communities upstate have some vital records pre-dating 1880.) The State Archives makes available for on-site use copies of New York State Department of Health microfiche indexes to birth, marriage, and death certificates filed with that Department. The indexes commence in 1880-81 and cover the entire state outside New York City. Index entries give only name, date, place of event, and State certificate number. Indexes for births become available for use by the public after 75 years, for marriages and deaths after 50 years. New York City Vital Records The State Library has bound volumes of indexes to records for births, deaths and marriages in all five boroughs of New York City for the years 1907-1918 only. What exactly IS the birth index? I am waiting for my medical history from the hospital where I was born, and I have sent a letter of request for records to the agency that placed me. I have also registered with the NYS Dept. of Health Adoption regisitry - does it make sense to research this 'birth index' or will I be wasting time, since I have found other outlets in which I can find information?

The Mormon Centers have the New York City birth index on microfilm only up to and including 1965. If your were born in NYC after 1965, the LDS Centers cannot get you that film. Hopefully later years will be included on microfilm soon! The NYPL in Manhattan has the original birth indexes up through 1985. I believe that later years are available to the public as that group of people all turn 18.
For years 1965 and before, you can find the exact film # that you need before you even go there to inquire. I am searching 1963 now for my cousin who has just decided to search. Jean Ebert Reunited 2001 |

birth indexes
Could someone please explain to me why birth indexes exist in some areas of NY State, but not others?? I was born in Buffalo, NY - would there be a birth index for the year 1968 in that area? Does anyone know for certain?
I got so excited after reading about the methods of searching in the NYC indexes but became quite disappointed when someone said these birth indexes are not public in some parts of the state. Any iinfo. will be appreciated. Thanks. |
