Disclosure
I've read a few threads about prospective adoptive parents waiting for "discolsure" about the children they are interested in adopting; what exactly does this mean?
I will (hopefully!) be adopting my foster child this year; what exactly am I entitled to in terms of "disclosure"- is it parent medical histories and his birth history? He's a baby and has been with me since birth, so there's no educational issues or previous foster families involved. Also, when am I entitled to this information (there is nothing that can be disclosed to me that would make me change my mind about adopting this baby- but, I am curious about his birth history and his birth family's medical histories). Thanks! |

Disclosure is also called "Part B". Obviously, no surprises in store for you re: your fosterbaby's medical history, but there may be some birth/neonatal info, and you may be lucky enough to get the medical history of his birth families. Our daughter's worker brought the documents to our home and reviewed them with us on her last home visit before she submitted the entire package to our adoption lawyer, but she could not give the documents to us until the adoption went through. She mailed all the documents to us after the adoption was finalized in court. Sadly, the birthfamilies refused to give any medical history, but there were tidbits the Worker had gleaned from other sources (parent's substance abuse treatment program reports, etc), and the social histories of the birthparents paint a clearer picture of our daughter's Story. I especially treasure the birthnames and birthdates of our daughter's 3 older sisters, who were all adopted out separately before our daughter was born. When she is older, and she wants to search, she will have a starting point.
