Traveling with Foster Children Out of State by Plane - Documentation Question???
So after many issues, i have permission to take my 2 foster kids from NJ to Florida in 2 weeks by plane. When I asked a high level supervisor at the county office what I need to have to present at the airline, they said I need to have the foster parent id, a copy of the birth certificate and a letter from the state. I then called the airline, Spirit Air, to confirm exactly what I need and they said gave me some wishy washy answers about not having a policy at this time.
Has anyone taken a foster child by plane across states and what documents did you present to the airline at the gate/check-in? |

Yes, we have taken our foster adopt child on a trip, not only in the states but outside the country. We have another trip planned as well. All you need Is Birth Certificate and letter from Case Worker stating that the trip is OK - give them the specifics to put on letter. That is It and You are Golden!

I h when we went to Fkirida all I had was the FP id letter and a letter from the "state" saying it was ok... but i was never asked...
Now in December we are going to Aruba and our Fd will be coming so we got her passport and we are getting a letter from the judge that it is ok to take her, just to be on the safe side. Also do not forget the insurance cards!! |

I have travelled out of state 2x by plane with my fosterchild (once to FL). I was not asked for ANYTHING...scary, huh?
P.S. I had the foster parent letter with me...no BC.

I've taken my FS on 2 trips now (actually, 4 airplane rides with the round trips) and no one ever asked me for documentation for the baby. I never got a letter stating it was okay, although I did fill out a travel authorization form. I'm wondering why airport authorities would even question you about your child...but, I guess its better to be safe than sorry. In the future, I will make sure to get a letter from my caseworker.
One time through security on my last trip, the officer asked the baby's name, and I told him the baby's entire name with an explanantion that he was my foster child and offer to show my resource parent letter- but, I think the guy was just making conversation! LOL |

I have flown with my children several times and never been questioned. I was told by the airlines several years ago that the only time you really need a child's birth certificate is if they are questioning the age - like a lap baby has to be under a certain age.

travel with foster kids
I've taken 4 foster kids on cruises: one to the Caribbean and one to Canada. I had birth certificates the first time and passports the second time. Nothing else was asked for.

I took Little Dude on many plane rides when he was still a foster child. Don't worry, there is no neon "F" on your kids heads. The security people don't need to know - nor do they care - that the child is a foster kid. Even when I bought Little Dude his own seat, I didn't have any ID. They just knew he was with me. But bring all that stuff anyway (especially foster parent letter and insurance cards in case (God forbid) someone gets sick and you have to go to the hospital while on vacation. One problem I ran into was an ear infection while out of state. I had to buy an antibiotic that was not covered by NJ AmeriChoice. Had to pay out of pocket.
