New to foster parenting/Bergen County

I am in Bergen County and I would love to hear from foster parents about the children placed with them. I am wondering if you can tell me the speed with which you received your first placement, and also if you know if there is a group that is most in need. For example, have you received a lot of older kids, special needs kids, multi-racial kids etc. Who is most in need, and if you request that group, do you think you will receive a placement sooner?

To be honest, the medical special needs kids scare me a bit, as I have no background in medicine whatsoever.

I was told that there are currently 50 foster homes in Bergen County, and about 100 kids who need placement. What I don't understand is why some foster parents don't get placements (from what I've read).

I've learned so much from this board already so thanks all!

While I am not in Bergen county I am from Nj... most of the children I have received are white, ages 10 weeks-3 years. We got a call for out first Fc just 4 days after our paper work was finalized.

Hi Arubagirl

Thanks for your reply. Have you adopted any of your placements?

If so, how long has it taken to be finalized?

We are in the beginning stages (we have to take the classes) but I am just trying to get a sense of what's ahead.

Welcome to the world of fostering!

I received my 1st placement 2 months after I was licensed- it was my 3rd placement call, though. The 1st 2 didn't work out for different reasons. My foster son's case is in guardianship and I am in the processing of completing adoption paperwork.

I'm not sure what type of child is most in need of placement. I've read the statistics on, though, but I don't remember where I saw it...it was a state website. It had placements broken down by age, race, and length of stay in-care.

Good luck!
