Question select home?

My best friend is having a baby placed with her tomorrpw. They were told they were not going to get a check or medicaid because they are a select home.
BioMom and BioDad signed away their rights in the hospital. They would even give the baby a name.

We were a select home for our 3rd son/adoption, straight adoption. But he was over the age of 2, had been in the system since birth, a minority and born exposed. So he continues to get a subsidy and medical. It is based upon the child not the adoptive parents. At least I've never heard of it being a different way.

I am guessig that since she's not getting a subsidy or medical is because the child isn't considered special needs by NJ standards.

The baby was abandoned in hospital under Safe Haven. They still have to wait six months to adopt him. He is not even two weeks old based on the hospital's guesstimate. What they said is that will not get a monthly check until its final. They don't care after he is legally theirs.

re: select home?

Is "select home" an actual term? I wonder why the recruiter didn't mention this as a possible option when he came to talk to my husband and I initially.

I didn't think any infants were free to adopt right from the hospital through DYFS. I thought all were foster/adopt, with the risk of losing them to a relative?

When you say that your friend won't get a check until after it's final, do you mean the adoption? Why would they get a check after the adoption and not before? That doesn't make sense to me. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

No. They don't want to give them a check before or after the finalization which won't happen for six months. They also argued about the Medicaid, claiming because they are a select home.

I was also contacted about a Safe Haven baby earlier this week...wonder if it's the same child?

But how can they provide the baby with any medical attention without at least a medicaid card? They can't put him/her on their insurance until they've adopted him. That doesn't seem right.

Daisy, most (all?) group insurance plans will add the baby as soon as the baby is "placed for purposes of adoption". The adoption does not have to be final.

Thanks!
I'm learning so much.

There are so many different situations! I knew a little bit about safe haven babies, but I didn't know about being a select home.

Is this type of situation rare?

Yes, I'd say it's rare. But, (I believe) if God has that as a plan for someone....it will be done!

I have determined that infants (as a single mom) are not my first choice.

Our trainer for the PRIDE classes told me about this baby today! She said that she was so excited because the baby went to a Gloucester county home and that the list is very long with people waiting for safe haven babies like this one.

How long was your friend on the waiting list, do you know?
