What is a summary hearing?


We received notice from the family court that we need to appear before the judge for a summary hearing in October.

The adoption is being delayed because T's bio dad is appealing which I understand can take up to a year but DYFS is hopeful to finalize by Christmas.

There isn't much to tell the judge. Do I have to bring anything like his life book or documentation with us? What will they ask us? Should I bring T with us? Will it take all day? DH has to arrange to take off of work.

From what I was told, a summary hearing is when the judge wants to know how everything is moving along regarding the adoption. My FS was scheduled for a summary hearing and it was canceled because his case was also in appeal. I would double check with your social worker and the child's law guardian to make sure that it was still on. In my case, no one even contacted me about the cancelation. I found out by a friend of mine who is a Law Guardian and spoke to my FS Law Guardian about the case and she mentioned to her that is was cancelled. I actually called down to the courthouse(the number is listed on the form) and spoke to someone who confirmed it also.

I am just telling you this because of what happened to me. Just double check.

I see this is a few months old but I just got a notice for a Summary Hearing myself and am wondering whatever happened with yours, Luke+Dawn...
