Non native adult adoption

Tánishi (Hello)
Hello Hope I am at the rite place to ask this. I have been told throyghout my life that I have Native blood but noone will tell me for sure. So a good friend has offered to Adopt me so that we hope will help with my Native Heritage. As he is really wanting me to Beable to have some proof of my Heritage. He is wanting me to ask if through the adoption if I will Inherite any of the Native rites. We are not looking for the free stuff that alot of the others are looking for. We are just wanting to beable to show proof that I am native as I am Proud to be even if I don't have the proof. But will I be able to Get a Native ID card to be able to show as proof of my heritage. and to be able to exercise some of my treaty rites . We have alos thought of looking into maybe an associate membership into a band but do not know what that would do for what we are wanting and if it would give me treaty rites.
sorry if this is confusing and if you have any questions please ask and maybe I can explain it better.
Thank you for any help that anyone can be
Joe

According to the guidlines of the federal government, Native descent cannot be passed through adoption. You will only be elidigble for a CDIB if your bio parents were members, or descended from members, of a federally recogntized tribe.

Regardless, this is only the federal government definition of who is Indian. Most of us dismiss this as a formality. Many of the people that I interact with during cultural events do not have a CDIB-some because they belong to a tribe that is not recognized and some because the paper trail doesn't prove ancestry to the BIA's satisfaction.

If you don't care about getting any benefits, then there is no need for "proof." Being Native is about culture. Get involved in cultural events and live life as a Native, without regard to how the BIA wants to classify you.

Hi thanks for the answer I am not really looking for the benifits as I can take care of my self in that respect.

I have been searching real hard and have come up with nothing on my Native Hertiage all I get from family is you don't need to know and I should be happy beings that I have a name. Well I tell them a name is just a name but a Heratiage is a person well they just say don't worry about it. Even my mum says she can't remember his name and feel lucky I was able to have a man give his last name to me> Oh well so much for family. I will keep searching I guess and the day I return to the grandfathers I will find my place. The main reason I was wanting a native ID card is so I can be with the person I am going to be married to and they live in Canada as of now so was looking for a way to spend time there with out haveing to do the Visitor visa or to change my citizenship as that cost alot to go thru immigration and I am just a poor horse trainer/outfitter.
Thanks for the answer NDN
Much Thanks
