Adoption in the 1930's
Looking for Native American Kinship
My mother was born September 11 1936 & adopted around 1939 or 1940. She was believed to be 1/2 Native American. She was told by her adopted parents that she had a brother that was 2 years older than her. From the time she was a baby until she was adopted, her life was in foster care. When she was about 4 years old her natural mother tried to get her back through the courts and was denied. The story she was told was her brother had died and that's why the natural mother wanted her. I can find no record of his death anywhere.
Her birth name was Bettye Evelyn McElhiney. She has tried for years to find out her background with no luck. Believed to be born around Silver City, New Mexico. She was adopted by a family from Roswell, New Mexico at the time.
If anyone has any information, please let me know. Thanks.
