What is Adoption?
A new book, "What is Adoption? Helping non-adopted children understand adoption," is simply the best adoption book for children I've read in many years.
The authors have captured the essence of adoption in language for children that I wish were more evident in books FOR adopted kids. Violet and Alex have been best friends since they were two. Now, years later, Alex shares his lifebook with Violet which spurs the question and answer session Violet has with her mom. The language is respectful and kid-friendly, and the concepts are presented in a way children can understand. Authors Sofie Stergianis (adoptive parent and adoption professional) and Rita McDowell (adoptive parent and educator) walk children through some of the more difficult concepts and word associations ("real," "gift") gently, without losing any of the joys and sorrows that are appropriate for children to understand. And illustrations by Alicia Hough are a delight. It's at the very top of my recommendation list! Take a look and pick up a copy... or several!
