Romanian Law Goes Into Effect

Romania's new adoption law went into effect on January 1st, however it appears that there may be hope for continuing - if limited - adoptions from that country.

The law basically restricts foreign adoptions to biological grandparents, however, the law also states that placement abroad will also be possible "if the search for Romanian adoptive families has failed." It will not be possible for children under the age of two to be adopted abroad.

There may be hope for future adoptions due to the language of the law and the recent election of a new Romanian president who wants to strengthen ties with the U.S.

I haven't seen any clarification yet about "the search for Romanian families" but will continue to monitor news reports to see if there's a specific time frame involved or other conditions. If you hear anything about it, feel free to post!

Thank you for this information. I have been anxiously waiting to hear what the actual laws were going to be.
Correct me if I am wrong, but it sounds like it could be very hopeful to adopt older children from Romania.
Please keep posting whatever you find out, or PM me if you like.
I have a 4 year old son from Romania and I would love to adopt a little girl from there.
Thank you again,
Kathi

These first reports sound that way to me, but without any details, there's no way to know how it will work, exactly. I'll be watching for clarifications.
