The Great Missouri Adoption Tax Break
Adopting and adoptive parents tend to be well aware of the federal tax credit - raised this year to a maximum of $10160 per child for all types of adoption, but what about state tax benefits? Well, Missouri has a $10,000 *state* tax credit - available for domestic *special needs* adoptions, but it has also been allowed for international adoptions, based partly on the ethnicity of internationally adopted children.
The Missouri Legislature has doubled the cap - to $4 million, with half earmarked exclusively for in-state adoptions and the other half open to credits for out-of-state (including international) special needs adoptions. How well do you know your state adoption tax benefits? Before you decide to move to Missouri, contact your State's Treasury Department for information about your state's tax breaks. To learn more about the Missouri tax credit and some interesting little twists including the ability to sell the tax credit to someone else (how strange is that?), see the full explanation from the State of Missouri.
