BMOMS/BFAMS: If you know baby's birthdate & county of birth, please read.

Hi,

I'm an adoptee, but here is a search tip for birthmoms and birthfamilies (for babies who were born in Minnesota):

The Minnesota Birth Index is a list of ALL births occurring in Minnesota. It lists the baby's name, county of birth, date of birth, and parents names. Adoptees are listed on the birth index in their ADOPTIVE names.

If you know your baby's date of birth, you can search that date using the Minnesota Birth Index and come up with a very short list of possible babies. Your baby's adoptive name WILL be on that list. If you know the county of birth, that will narrow it down even further.

For example, I put in my own information (birthdate and county) and my adoptive name was on the list. Once I ruled out babies of the opposite gender, the list was only 15 or so names (and I was born in Hennepin County, probably the most populous). Smaller counties would produce an even shorter list.

You can access the above information on the internet but I'm not allowed to post where per the forum rules. If you want more information, PM me. I'm sure you can also access it in person somehow via the Department of Health but I have not tried that.

Hope this helps someone!!

Best of luck in your search,
Melissa

Hi,

I'm also an adoptee from Minnesota. I tried entering various combinations of birth date with and without my county of birth, and I was not anywhere to be found in the MN birth index. I also tried just my adopted name, and that didn't come up either. My brother is also adopted, and I couldn't locate him in the index at all (searching by name and/or birth date). Unfortunately, it seems that not all adoptees were added to the index... It's a bit of a strange feeling not to show up at all!

Melissa:

I did the same thing you did and got a very short list. What did you do then with the short list? You eliminated the opposite sex, and then what...did you call the people or what?
Thanks,
Kathy
