OT: calling cards for deployed Marine
Okay, this is totally off the topic of adoption, but I know there are some of you in the military out there, so I'm hoping you can help me out a bit.
There is a young man from our church that is on his way to Afghanistan right now for his first deployment as a Marine. We are organizing a care package for him for Christmas, and his mom mentioned that he needed calling cards, but she didn't know if there was anything special about what they needed to be. Anyone out there know what I should buy? Can I just buy a regular international card, or is there something special, or something that would be more economical? Also, we have heard baby wipes are helpful for times they can't shower as often. We also plan to send some non-perishable food, like beef jerky, some hard candy, etc. Any other ideas??? It's my understanding that we can use the Priority Mail flat rate boxes just as we would in the U.S. since it is going to a military base....any info I should know about that??? Thanks SO much for any information you can provide!

The boys I have sent to have loved drawings from kids, silly little toys from the dollar store. junk food (Pringles, pop tarts, cookies, etc) one wanted small stuffed animals, he kept them in his pocket to hand out to children he met. Chap stick and baby wipes and sun screen were also things asked for. I don't know about the calling cards, oh and magazines, one kid really liked readers digest, others like other types. books of word games are also good for passing time.
