My husband and I are both in the military. We're looking into adoption when we get back from our deployments, but have no clue where to start. We want to adopt in the states. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I already know about the reimbursement stuff, I just want to know how we go about starting. Thank you!

How are you wanting to adopt? We are adopting a foster child, so we went through adoptuskids.com now we are just waiting on a case worker to call us to set up a meeting.

Hi, my husband is in the Air Force. I think our biggest concern during our adoption process was trying to get everything done before a deployment/TDY hit us. So, we moved QUICK. I think the very first step will be to do some reading. The first book an agency gave us (and the best in the initial stage) is called The Complete Adoption Book. It'll help you decide which type of adoption fits your needs; domestic, foster or international. Then, you'll decide what type of child you want to parent. Same race or not? Newborn or older child? Once you know which direction you're going, you'll have a million more questions which can be answered by us here, or your agency. So, then you need to go about choosing an agency. You'll need to have a homestudy no matter which course of action you take and the agency will handle that. Do some research, all agencies are NOT created equal. You can ask people here for referrals, check out the BBB. Hope this helps! The first steps were by far the scariest. Oh, and don't feel like whatever decision you make is set in stone. We were all set on international adoption from Korea. But then, part way into the process, we switched gears and changed to domestic and adopted our beautiful daughter who is biracial (AA/CC). Hello I noticed you are Airforce, We are Navy. I was wondering if you were stationed overseas or states? We are overseas and looking to adopt domestic. Any help would be great!

We were stateside with our domestic adoption... I'm really not sure what the steps would be for an overseas domestic adoption. I do know that people have done it, but it just requires some additional steps/paperwork. The agency we initially started with was a national agency and they had families waiting to adopt who were in Denmark, Canada, ect... I'll PM you the name of the agency, I don't think I'm allowed to disclose that on the forums. But I'd just give them a call, talk to one of the counselors and see where you should start. Even if you don't want to sign up with them, you could still just gather information about the process. Goodluck!
