60 day waiver question

I remember reading a post about having to re-apply every 60 days for Tricare on here until the adoption was finalized, but I can't find that post... Unless I dreamed it.

Why would you need to do this? If the child is loaded in DEERS immediately for pre-adoption, then you should be good to go for Tricare, right?

I was told all I needed to do was let DEERS folks know that the adoption was finalized, and then to let them know her SSN when we get it.

FYI - we are using Tricare Standard/Extra, not Prime.

Hoping to adopt again down the road...

I believe all the info you have is corect. Our newborn is supposed to come in November, I was told I could arly enroll the child into deers and get her setup on tricare...then give the ss# when it comes. The other info...I've never heard of it.

Hmmm... I spent 2 hours at the Tricare office on base recently as they tried to get to the bottom of this question. The final answer was: The baby is automatically covered from birth through the first 60 days of life.(As it would be if you gave birth to the baby.) The baby is automatically covered under PRIME for the first 60 days, unless you have otherwise enrolled them. The baby has to be put into the DEERS system in order for you to enroll them in TRICARE. DEERS enrollment doesn't automatically enroll them in Tricare. You have to enroll them in Tricare separately from the DEERS process. Once they are in DEERS you should have no problems enrolling them in TRICARE and there should be no reason to "re-enroll" if all of their info in DEERS is correct.

I hope I understood your question - and the info helped. GOOD LUCK!!!

Yep, we're good now. We got Bella enrolled in DEERS when she was 3 weeks old (after ICPC cleared us). We opted for Tricare Standard though after finding a civilian doctor we were more comfortable with and was understanding of our situation. We didn't need to do anything more with Tricare (after spending time with their office I got that final answer). But if we were going to to Prime, just like with any kid, you have to enroll prior to that 60 day window.

The kids stay in DEERS, although after finalization, you DO need to go back to have them change the coding (from pre-adopt to permanent child).
