My Dh and I are new to the world of adoption we are hoping in the next year or so to begin our adoption process after my DH returns from Korea. I am wondering if it will be harder to adopt being a military family? Is it better to deal with an private agency over a state agency? If anyone can give me advice I would surely appreciate it.

My hubby's active duty and we've already adopted once and will most likely adopt the child that we have legal guardianship of. We really haven't had any issues that were harder or easier for us, because of being military. How long has your hubby been in Korea? If you'd like to talk, PM me and I can explain more.

I read that the military will offer anywhere from $2000 -$5000 in reimbursements for adoption costs, but only if you use a non-profit organization.

My parents were military when my brother & I were adopted. My dad even add orders when the placement call came. This was back in 1972 and Michigan transferred the case to Florida where my mom was going to live while my dad was overseas. They had no problems.

It probably depends on the type of adoption you are looking at. IF you are looking at international or waiting child, then it should not. In fact some agencies like military families because they are exposure to more diversity.

If you are looking at domestic infant adoption - then maybe. I am sure that some bfamilies looking for open relationships probably passed on us when looking at our profile because my DH was military police. But, that being said, there were at least 2 that did contact us BECAUSE military held a sense of connection for them. So all in all, we did have less initial contact with pbparents than we may have had otherwise, which was at times very discouraging. But then the right match came along, and bmom likes the fact my DH is in policing, because her gfather was, and the bdad likes the fact he's military, because his family is.

The military will also reimb part of your fees for adoption if done thru a non-profit agency, which is nice. Especially since my employer does have any adoption benefits. GRR!
