As a fellow adoptive parent who recently brought home a beautiful daughter from Guatemala, I know one of the hardest aspects of the process is dealing with those around you who just don’t understand what you are going through. Fortunately I, like you, have found the forums and Yahoo groups which gave us a lot of support during the process. Once we neared the end of the process we starting looking for local adoption groups to socialize with. Luckily we happened across a yahoo group called FamiliesWithChildrenFromGuatemala. This is a group for Michigan based families who have adopted or in the process of adopting from Guatemala. I was offered the position of co-organizer of the group to support finding new members and I gladly accepted as this group has been so meaningful to my family. Currently we have nearly 70 Michigan members but I know there are many more Michiganders out there. The purpose of our group is to offer support and socialization opportunities for these families both before and after your child comes home. We offer support through the yahoo group email and website and socialization is done through group gatherings and local play groups. Presently we have play groups in the Detroit, Lansing, and Grand Rapids areas. Our group is centered around participation and we require members to maintain contact. Our group is not associated with any agencies and agency employees are not permitted to join.
