private adoption out of state with BMOM in Michigan

Hello everyone. My husband and I have had a BMOM, who is due in April, ask us if we were willing to adopt her child. My stepsister is the go between. We live in another state while they live in Michigan. Does anyone have any information to help us out? We are going to get an attorney where we are at and one in MI. I am told we still have to have a home study done. We are not going through an agency. What paperwork has to be done? We are just trying to get as much answered as possible to be prepared of course.

I am also worried about bringing the baby home after the birth. I have read that we can't until all the paperwork is final. Does anyone know of temporary guardianship with an extended visit to allow us to bring our new baby home right away? We live over 12 hours from them and I wouldn't be able to stay out there for a month until the paper work goes through. How fast is Michigan with the paperwork, etc? Any information would be a great help. My sister is contacting an attorney today for us in MI. Does anyone know of some great ones out there? Thanks again

Thanks. I was referrring to the Interstate Compact Agreement. I know that it has to be completed prior to bringing the baby home. I have read on some of the forums that one lady was granted temp guardianship with the extended visit. Is that when we would be required to take a foster care course? Also, one member stated that her attorney had sent those forms overnight, and she was able to bring her new baby home four days after the baby was born. They say it all depends how fast that state is in getting the paperwork done.

We were just contacted re:adopting this child 1 1/2 weeks ago. So it doesn't give us much time. I just want it all in place by that time. Thank you for replying to my post.
