Hyperbaric treatments for seizures?
Has anyone tried them for seizure kiddos? I've been poking around YouTube and have been seeing some incredible things happening when using the treatments. Just curious about experiences? Expenses? We're hoping to adopt a little boy with complex partial seizures who is currently on the Keto diet. His neurologist had brought up the issue of hyperbaric so I'm doing my research!! :-)

Not adoption wise, but I have worked with a family that wanted to go down the hyperbaric path and insurance wanted nothing to do with the treatment because they classified it as 'experimental'. Just make sure you check and see where your insurance company stands.

I have cosidered doing it for my daughter because she had a stroke. I just spoke at length with a doc at the National Institute of Health whose opinion I trust about HB treatment. She said she thought it was worth a try because it certainly was not dangerous or bad for you. The theory is that being super oxygenated gets O2 to areas of the brain and body where it was not making it before, arguably "waking up" areas that had gone dormant. I can't quite imagine how it would be helpful for seizures. Actually, I can see how it would activate an area of the brain that was sending out a bad electrical signal because it was not getting enough O2. THey are usually not covered by insurance is my understanding but one parent was telling me, it is only about $50 a treatment and you don't need a ton of them. I'd try it. I would also make sure your nuero is trying new (as in so new you can't get a generic) seizure meds. I find that lots of nuero's don't really keep up with the newest drugs. See what kind of meds he is on also. THat diet is really hard to follow, just so you are aware.

Ooo. Are you in Vegas? If so, I can give you the docs to avoid! I like our doc but there is apparently a new lady doc that people are raving about. I heard about her from the same mom who reccomended HB treatments. I don't know if you have ever had medically fragile kids but this is a rough place to raise them in terms of finding competant medical care.

Nev - Thanks for the info! We're seeing Dr Raja right now in Henderson for my son's Tourettes, he's pretty progressive and actually feels that between the HB treatment and following the Keto diet that this little boy may be off meds altogether! After reading A LOT about this diet it has a really good prognosis. He is currently G-tube fed so the diet is actually a lot easier that way then meal planning. He's been on it now for about a year and I know normally its a 2yr plan.
Any help you can offer on DR's is very appreciated!!! Both me & my husband have our own insurance plus the med coverage that will be coming with this little guy so hopefully we can find some good Dr's!!

You still will not be able to find good docs in Vegas most likely! Raja is not the doc you want to avoid so you are safe! We use Maller and I like her a lot. G-tube feeding would certainly make it easier on Keto diet.
My other doc advice is that even though you assume that you should avoid UMC at all costs, if possible, if you have emergency brain issues with your kids, that is where you want to be. UMC and Sunrise are the only two hospitals in town that have 24 hour doctor staffed PICU's. Having spent substantial amounts of time in both hospitals, UMC is considerably better with kids with underlying disabilities. Do you know for sure this little guy is coming to you? PLease let me know if I can be of any help. I have an extremely medically complex 11 year old so I have been through pretty much every medical specialty imaginable with her. |
