"The Lost Child" is an excellent film about an Adult American Indian woman's experience of adoption and reunion with her Bio-family. The cinematography is amazing and plot is an absolute tear-jerker. I could have only wished to have such an amazing reunion myself. This is a must see movie, not only for American Indian adoptees, but all adoptees.

Then She Found Me
I saw the trailer recently and the film looks pretty lame and full of stereotypes. Here's the overview from my local cinema:
Then She Found Me is a romantic drama produced by Christine Vachon's Killer Films and with a great cast comprising of Helen Hunt, Colin Firth, Bette Midler and Matthew Broderick. Then She Found Me is a very funny and very moving story about a woman in the midst of a unique mid-life crisis. April Epner (Hunt) is thirty-nine years old and her biological clock is ticking very loudly. But her world is turned upside down when, in quick succession, her husband (Matthew Broderick) wants a divorce, her adoptive mother dies and her real mother, an overbearing talk-show host (Bette Midler) materializes. Devastated on the one hand and bewildered on the other, April finds solace from her rapidly unravelling life in a growing relationship with Frank (Colin Firth), a handsome, warm, very English, suddenly-single dad whose wife recently left him and their children. The film is based on the 1990 novel written by Elinor Lipman.

I'm watching Martian Child right now and it portrays several aspects of adopting a child with emotional disabilities really well. So far theres 30 min left and I can't figure out why the critics hated it, I suppose it could have a bad ending or something....

What about...
TWINS with Arnold Schwartzenegger & Danny Devito? That scene where Devito says "I'ts every orphans' dream - that you'll find them and they'll say "Gee, we never knew - we're so glad you found us!" - it's all a crock!" (I'm paraphrasing - can't remember the actual words) - but the look on his face, in his eyes - spot on.
And what about "The Color Purple"??? That reunion scene in the end - I SOB uncontrollably EVERY time! |

Homer Simpson adopts from China
The episode is called "Goo Goo Gai Pan'. If you do a Google search on "Homer Simpson adopts from China" you'll get the run-down. It's Season 16, Episode 12 and was aired on 3/13/2005. I haven't seen it yet but would love to!

Wow!
What great titles here so far! My wife and I love to watch films about adoption. I've seen several of the movies mentioned on page one and they all bring me to tears. The only one I haven't seen mentioned anywhere is a documentary called Bitter Sweet that chronicles the process of adoption through the eyes of nearly everyone involved. Another very emotional film that is also very informative. I look forward to purchasing some more of the films you all mentioned!

'Orphan' horror film sparks outcry among adoptive parents
'Orphan' Horror Film Outrages Adoptive Parents - ABC News
Apparently adoptive parents., adoption and foster parenting organisations were outraged about the line in the film trailer, "It must be hard to love an adopted child as much as your own". The Senior VP of Communications of Warner Bros said the company is moving "as quick as possible" to remove the offending line from the film's marketing materials. The film will be released in July.

Although not directly related, as an adoptee I couldn't help but be pulled into Star Trek (2009)
1. Spock is a child of two worlds. He doesn't know which one to remain loyal to and if he can remain loyal to both. A court of elders judges him, while his parents are there for him. The court of elders in this case could be seen as the government's regulation on adoptees - seeing only numbers, orphanages holding back records because they only want to see the orphanage as our origins, etc. 2. Kirk never knew his father. 3. Romulus and Remus, orphans. 4. Losing your home world. I don't know if this was intentional, but there are many themes that I found in this film that related back to being adopted especially international adoption as in regards to Spock - in a sense. It's not a clear connection, but just thought I'd add it because of how strong the themes seemed to resonate at points. Last edited by Josh5339 : 06-04-2009 at 11:16 PM. |

Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Excerpt from the film summary on IMDB: "Abandoned by his biological father, Thomas Button, after Benjamin's biological mother died in childbirth, Benjamin was raised by Queenie, a black woman and caregiver at a seniors home."
