Angry Poor Little One

How heartbreaking for this little one. Whenever I read this kind of stuff I can only imagine how derserate the Bmom must have been to do such a horrible thing. Thank God for these elderly people that found this baby that could have died.

Newton man finds newborn in bag on doorstep
By Jessica Van Sack and Mike Underwood
Wednesday, September 10, 2008 - Updated 13m ago

A healthy newborn baby girl, umbilical cord still attached, was found in a bag on the doorstep of a home in Newton today, witnesses and police said.

A shaken 80-year-old woman told the Herald how her husband, 81, found the baby this afternoon on Moulton Street. At first she thought her husband was kidding.

The baby was tucked in what resembled a beach bag, wrapped in a blanket and placed on a pillow. The little girl cried for the first time as police scooped her up shortly after noon, the woman said.

The child was taken to Newton-Wellesley Hospital where she is said to be in good health and feeding from a bottle.

Rachel Kagno, spokeswoman for Newton-Wellesley Hospital, said the 6 pound, 4 ounce baby girl was in the special care nursery.

“The baby is in excellent condition,” Kagno said. “She’s alert. She’s eating well and she took a bottle.”

Lt. Bruce Apotheker, Newton police spokesman, said the child was “several hours old” when discovered.

Apotheker said the elderly man who found the child opened his door to check his mail and looked down to see the baby sleeping in the bag. The child was wrapped in a blanket and placed on top of a pillow inside the bag.

The startled man touched the child’s cheek and her eyes opened, Apotheker said. The man immediately called 911 at 12:09 p.m.

“At this point,” Apotheker added, “it appears (the baby) was left totally randomly.”

A note attached to the child asked for someone to look after the baby, Apotheker said.

Still, he added, the risks were great. “To leave a baby on someone’s doorstep, anything could have happened to that child,” he said.

Police swarmed the area around the house where the baby was found and questioned neighbors along the street full of quaint single-family homes.

Neighbor Amy Kantor was stunned.

“Nobody saw anything,” she said. “That’s why it’s so odd. Just in the middle of the day.”

Kantor happened to be coming home when she saw police scouring the area. She said she thinks it was no accident that the baby was left in front of her neighbor’s home.

“I would think they knew they are always home,” she said. “Whoever left it obviously wanted the baby to live.”

The baby was found at an address in Newton Lower Falls that is less than a mile from Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

There was a small spot of blood on the white blanket the baby was found in, police said. The child’s umbilical cord was clamped at the scene, police added.

Police said the bag had the words “Harbor Medical Associates” on the outside.

Massachusetts has Safe Haven Act allowing a parent to legally surrender a baby, aged seven days or less, at a hospital, police station or manned fire station without facing criminal prosecution.

Those are the ones that you just want to scoop up and bring home and never let them outside. That poor baby, and poor mama who was obviously for one reason or another to scared to surrender her.

I fully agree with you Kelceesmom. I wish I could just go get that little one and take her home forever. I don't know what I would do if I found a little bundle like her on my doorstep. I would be so tempted to keep her and never let her go.

I wonder if the mom (or dad) knew this elderly couple somehow. I am somewhat familiar with that area, and this seems so "random." I know in these circumstances, DSS gets "flooded" with calls, so I am sure they will find a good home for this baby.

Wow, I'm glad the baby was found so quickly and is safe.

My heart broke when I heard this on the news. Then I heard the gentleman's 911 call.
