birth sibling

We live in Michigan. We adopted our 4th child (1st adopted) through private adoption almost 2 years ago. He is now 2. We recently received the 1st contact from the birthmother via the agency. In her letter she states that she had another baby 12/2003, that she lost custody of a month later. We know she is in another state, we just don't know which one.We have the baby's name and birthdate as well as birthparents names, birth dates, SSNs, etc. Is there anyway we can find this child? We want to adopt him.

We were already preparing to adopt again, this time through the public system, when we received this letter. We hadn't been matched with a child yet, but are already approved for adoption through an agency that does interstate adoption.

Each state should have an advocate's office. You can usually find the phone number on the state's social services website. I would start there.

Good luck!

I became a member today just so I could reply to your note. I am a foster parent, also in Michigan. My husband and I are in a similar situation. I just wanted to inform you that one of the guidlines for adoption (at least in MI) are if the child has been placed with a foster home for 12 months or longer, the foster parents have first right to adopt. This rule preceeds reunification of siblings. I hope for your sake that you can resolve your issue before the one year has passed. God bless you all.
