Nutrition and ADHD

I am needing to find some good books on nutrition and ADHD. My DS who we adopted a year ago in December had a growth chart in his records from October 2003 and he weighed 41 pounds at 6 yrs old. He just went to the doctor yesterday (behavioral/developmental pediatrician who follows him monthly) and he weighed 42 pounds at 7 yrs old. He's been hovering right around that weight for almost 16 months now!! That cannot be normal! The doctor isn't too concerned because he's still on the growth chart, but I am. He eats and eats pretty good and I've even started giving him a protein drink and good vitamins. I just don't know what to do to get weight on this kid! We probably will be consulting a nutritionist soon, but I wanted to do some reading.

Looking forward to hearing from you all!!
Cathy

How does he look?
My dd has not gained any weight in about a year and a half, either. She has ADHD and was started on meds a year and a half ago. She had been a bit pudgy I though at that time. She has grown in height since then and looks great! She was not even fat before- and was only about 50% on the wt chart, but it wasn't right for her. Now with her ht, her wt is perfect! The peds are not worried about it because she is eating well.

To me, he looks very skinny. He has absolutely NO body fat. He is growing in height because his jeans are getting too short and I've gone to the next size up, but it's so hard to find pants/jeans/shorts to fit him because he's so skinny.

Dear Kathy,

My son was born premature and also has ADHD & I was having a difficult time trying to get him to eat & gain weight. He has been 35-36lbs it seems like for as long as I can remember. I went to his Neurologist that works with ADHD and she suggested to try a drug called Per-actin (they use it with cancer patients to gain their appetite). Well, I tried it and man it has done wonders for my son. He gained 5 lbs in 6 months (I know it doesn't sound like a lot) but believe me it was great and his Dr. was extremely impressed to. So he takes his medication for his ADHD in the morning and the Per-actin before he goes to bed. He'll eat like 4-5 bowls of ice cream at night which is great for him. We are so pleased with his appetite improvement. Discuss it with your Dr. and see what he/she has to say about it. Good Luck.

Lorraine
