LDS Parents - OT Help...

Heya!

Hope you don't mind me asking for a bit of help and has nothing to do with adoption. lol!

My son is having a sleepover party on Saturday. One of his friends is LDS. I want to be sure I offer things to eat/drink that he can have. I don't want to embarrass or single him out at all by not having things available and him having to say "no thanks" and feel left out etc. His parents didn't say anything and I felt odd asking.

Other than caffeine...is there anything I should not serve? Obviously there isn't one size fits all, but if I can just get the basics, that would be good.

Thanks!

Hi -

LDS kids are quite normal kids. They can eat pizza, popcorn and all the food other kids eat. Mormons don't drink alcohol or smoke but can eat and drink anything they want. And some mormons even drink caffeine. I am sure what you are serving will be fine. Don't stress about it.

Crick, even caffiene is more of a personal choice, rather than a religious thing.

Don't serve him alcohol, drugs, tea, or coffee and you'll be just fine. LOL

I would assume that most all parents (LDS or not) would likely follow those same rules which is probably why the parents didn't think to say anything.....because if you'd give it to any child, it's ok to give to an LDS one.....

We're really not all that strict when you really get down to it.

LOL! I didn't mean to make y'all sound like aliens! I just wasn't sure about the caffeine thing or anything else that might be taboo. Hmm...no alcohol? Man..that really puts a crimp in my party plans for these 11 year olds!

How thoughtful of you to be aware of his comfort like that. Very cool.

Based on all of the posts I have read that you have written, I'm sure you don't have to worry. The only thing my nieces and nephews have mentioned as "problems" - or uncomfortable situations at a party is when conversations turn inappropriate (not much you can do about that after the lights are out - the kids will have to censor themselves, if needed), or when the group at a party is watching a movie they aren't comfortable watching. As a rule (not always followed), LDS people watch no rated R movies. And for 11 year olds, I would not show a PG-13 unless you have cleared it with the parents. There are plenty of good movies out there that it shouldn't be a problem, especially for 11 year olds, to find a good PG movie.

That was the only thing that came to mind when I read your post. And some LDS kids will drink caffinated drinks, others will be uncomfortable with it, so it's good to have something else on hand.

You are so cool for checking... I want YOU to be my daughter's friend's mom!!! (she is six -and came home telling me all about "Beevis and Butthead"... Delightful. Thank you, neighbors!)
