LDSFS Requirements
I've read a lot about the requirements of LDSFS and I had some questions for other LDS Members. DH and I are converts, we were married before converting and are interested in adoption now. What I'm finding is that we will not meet the qualifications because we were not married in the temple, but were sealed. The requirements I read state that couples must be married and sealed in the temple with a current recommend. We were sealed and we do have a current recommend, but were married before converting.
How can we address this? Will we be able to use LDSFS even though we were not married in the temple? Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. Liz |

I'm almost positive it means, "Sealed" and "married to each other"
As in, if you are divorced and living with someone (or not) then you are still considered "sealed" even tho you aren't married. Hence, you wouldn't qualify. But you are married to each other, and have been sealed and have current reccomends, so it would be fine! There is no "marriage" in the temple sealing ceremony. The "marriage" is the legal document signed and witnessed. Then you go get sealed. The signing of the document takes place in the foyer or offices prior to the sealing ceremony. You had a marriage ceremony then a sealing ceremony. In the temple, there is only a ceremony for the sealing part.

Thank you aspenhall.
I guess I read the site wrong. The portion I was talking about said, "Basic requirements for an infant adoption include a couple being (1) married at least two years, (2) married to each other in the temple and maintain current recommends". Maybe I am misunderstanding. We're still learning a lot and I was a little confused. Liz |

Again, Thank You!
I guess I should just call and ask. I'm not sure we're there yet. DH has reservations about adopting, given everything in the press. |

Well, you can always start going to the FSA group meetings and get educated while you decide
I emailed my CW to let her know of the typo... I'll let you know what she says

That was us
My husband joined the church after we were married. We were sealed in the temple 3 years after we were married. We applied for adoption 1 year after our sealing. We had been married for more than 2 years and had been sealed for a year - those were the requirements. We now have a beautiful 2 1/2 year old and are "expecting" in November.
If you have any other questions I'd be happy to help.

I spent the day emailing with the sweetest guy sfrom LDS-FS. Here's what I was told... You need to be married for a total of 24 months. Period. You also need to be sealed. Period. They fall within the same 24 month time frame. So, you can be sealed the day before you start the application process. You just need to be sealed. There's no wait time afterward. We need a year to get ready anyway...I was baptized a month ago so this works for us. We'll be sealed around then. |

That sounds great!
I know that lots and lots have changed since we first started the process 5 years ago. I'm glad that you were able to go right to the source and have questions cleared up. Good luck and congratulations on your recent baptism.

My husband was raised in the church, went on a mission, etc. I am a convert at 17 years old. We were married civily and sealed in the Temple the following year! We adopted our son through LDSFS almost a year ago!
As long as you are sealed in the Temple and have current Temple recommends...you can adopt through LDSFS!! Congratulations! It is a wonderful experience! ![]() |

You qualify - as long as you are maried to each other by a court of law/representative for two years and are sealed in the temple to each other and hold current recommends you qualify. If you are in doubt I would reccommend you call your local LDSFS office and make an appointment to talk to the social worker. You will need to do this to get the ball rolling so you might as well do it now - even if your intention is to just as questions. You dont pay anything until all of your paperwork is filled out and ready to go. The sooner you make the appointment the sooner you will find your answers. Good Luck
