Have you ever heard of PECS ? It is a picture communication system for kids with communication difficulty. I have used this
system with my daughter and with some of the kids I work with at
school. It is faster than signing and the child can communicate with anyone. You can see this system at www.dotolearn.com.
If you would like more information you can e-mail me at
karen.hill@sevier.k12.ut.us Good luck and be patient, I never
thought my daughter would communicate for a long time.

Don't say, "What do I know?"

You know your child! You know what he likes, dislikes, and frequently, you probably know what he is trying to communicate. One of my sons only spoke 5 words at his second birthday. He caught up. He has had an unusual development, and continues to be out of step with his age goup peers, but he is growing, and if he is 10 now, doing calculus, but frequently acting like a toddler, oh well. He will even out.

Get whatever information you can, but keep looking for what works, even if what works is something you stumble upon yourself. Even if it is contrary to the experts. Safety first, and beyond that, remember that even good old Dr. Spock said, "You know more than you think you do."

Thumbs up book recommendation

Hi I read your posts from last February and was wondering how the sensory issues went? The out of sync child is a good book, but I would also recommend Like Sound Through Water. I can get the author's name if you can't find it online. It's a personal story of a mother and son's journey through this issue. It's a great read.

Michelle
Hoping to adopt in the next year!

Hi
Sign language is great for every baby and toddler to learn..it has been proven to improve intelligence, lessen temper tantrums and improve language later on.

What we used for Ana was the DVD series at our local library called "Signing Time" with Alex and Leah..by Rachel Coleman..lots of fun DVD's that our daughter loved watching and she is doing about 50 signs...we had started her learning sign language when she came home from Guatemala at 9 months old..just some basic ones..
She was actually testing 12 months ahead in most area's..then she got 3 flu shots in a 8 week period ( 2 by mistake) all with mercury in them..she had mental status changes after the 3rd shot..she is now testing 9-12 months behind with expressive and receptive is at age level (was way above)..so....we continue with sign language..speech therapy 2x a week..making slow improvements..not articlulating too well thats for sure..
She was saying 15 words clearly at 15 months old..than after the shots she went down to 3 words..took her 9 months to be able to say most of the words she lost at 15 months old..so sad..

Try the DVD's by Rachel Coleman..kids learn alot from them and they are fun..
