Genetic doctor?
My son is 3 years old and we adopted him from Kazakhstan a little over 2 years ago. He has very little speech and has been in speech therapy for 6 months. He just started early intervention preschool 4 days a week. The doctors are concerned because he isn't talking and he has a prominent forehead and tiny ears. They want him to have genetic testing done. Has anyone else dealt with this and what is envolved? I am a nervous wreak!!!

omg....don't worry, genetic testing is so easy. My ds4 had it done twice. Once as a tiny baby, and once about 2 or 3. Both times involved a physical exam, blood test, and urine sample. Most of what they were looking for were in the form of genetic markers in the samples, and the rest were looking over his body for oddities...like one long toe....ok, it is the only one i can remember
lol. anyway, it was SO not a big deal. AND it was such a relief as ds had a shaky family background- each of his siblings had a different genetic disorder- same mom, all different dads...so there was no telling what would be wrong with e....who had many things wrong his first 3 years. In the end, both times, the doctors founds nothing genetically wrong...or even remotely interesting. By far, it was the least invasive testing/procedures he went through. PM me if you want to talk more, but I am promising you it is not that big of a deal. |
