We did it!

We sent in our application to adopt from Korea. I'm so nervous! I hope it goes more smoothly than our first adoption.

The agency we're using lets us choose gender if we have only the opposite gender (which we do). We're hoping for a little girl w/ minor/correctable SN.

Anyone else just starting out?

Thank you both. Bringing children into our home has never been easy (8 m/c, failed treatments, DS's adoption took twice as long as what was typical, we even applied to adopt a girl from foster care and were not chosen). I'm SO NERVOUS this will be difficult, or that we'll be turned down.

Congratulations and good luck.

My wife and I are just about to begin our homestudy. This is our first adoption. Based on others we know who adopted from Korea, we were hoping to be home with child in 2010. With the increasing wait times we're now looking towards early 2011, or maybe into the summer if things continue to slip.

Congrats to you too, Kizzz! Thanks for posting!

Do you have any other children? Or will this be first adoption AND first child?

One thing I do have experience in is the homestudy. The first time I built it up in my mind and was very nervous about it. It was actually a piece of cake (in case you are wondering or nervous).

Our app should have arrived 1/25 so hopefully in the next week or two we'll get the homestudy scheduled. I hope.

With the timelines our agency gave us, we also hope to have the child home either very late in '10 or '11.

It'd be cool (but maybe not likely) if we ended up traveling at the same time.

Good luck and please keep me updated on how you're doing/what step you are on.

Thank you LJR -

1st adoption, 2nd child. We have a bio-son. Not really sure yet if we can request gender, but I think we could for gender balancing. That wasn't too clear and is one of the questions we have when we meet with our social worker.

Not really all that nervous about the homestudy. Niece and nephew were adopted from Korea through the same agency. My brother has assured us that we'll have nothing to worry about. I'm sure my wife will have me polishing the plastic spoons the night before though.

If everything runs on the short side of the timeframes were were given we could be looking at Jan-2011. I don't expect that though. Everything I've heard is that the Korean adoptions are taking increasingly longer.

I'll keep you posted, please do the same.

Congratulations!

We just returned home from Korea with our daughter about three weeks ago. Let me know if you have any questions. We had a great experience!

That's wonderful. Congrats.

I have a couple of questions, if you don't mind. Could you give me a little info about how your timeline went after the homestudy? I see you had the referal in mid-Sep-09. How long did it take to get that, and when did you get the notice to travel?

Thanks and good luck with your little girl.

Heart

Hi!
Congrats on beginning the process again (or for the first time - I saw a couple people are now on this thread!). I'm Christy and we're about to start our homestudy as well. Hoping to get matched with a social worker this week. We got all of our paperwork in a couple of weeks ago and it was almost done being processed part way through this week.
This is our first experience with adoption and it's been overwhelming and exciting all at once. We have 2 biological children, a boy and a girl, so we're not requesting boy or girl - happy with either - so we hear our child is likely to be a boy.
For those of you with children at home already - have you told them that you're adopting? We're not sure when to tell our children (6 & 3). We're thinking maybe when we send our packet to Korea might be a good time. We'll see.
I'd love to hear timelines, etc as well if anyone is interested in sharing. Good luck to all!
~Christy

Hi ChrEliza,

I'm excited you are starting the process, my husband and I are still in the "discussion" phase but we are both leaning towards adoption...Would you mind PM about which agency you are using? I would just like to find out as much as possible. Congratulations! Please keep posting, I'd love to hear about your journey. -Jen

I'm so happy to see a few of us right at about the same stage!

I believe with Korea you usually have to use an agency in your state. I think there are exceptions if you are requesting special needs.

Take a look at this chart to find an agency that does Korean adoptions in your state:
Adopting from Korea - US Adoption Agencies with Korean Child Placing Programs

I hope this isn't agency discussion. I think one thing to keep in mind is, there are 3 different "sending" agencies from Korea. All the agencies here in the US work with one of those 3 agencies. I think depending on what "sending" agency your "home" agency is working with, the timelines could be different.

I'm still laughing about your plastic spoons comment. hahahaha. How cool your new child will share a heritage with their cousins as well as adoption. My brother and SIL are experiencing infertility and I would love it if they jumped on the adoption bandwagon... but you can't push these things of course. It's just been such an amazing experience for us, kwim?

ChrEliza - Our kids are still very young (3.5 and nearly 2). We have not told them anything yet--we haven't even told our extended family yet! B/c our kids are so young I don't think we'll tell them till we get a referral. Before then we might start to talk about how fun babies are and how fun it would be to have a baby in our family. hee hee. Fun to think about, actually.

Something I forgot to add:

ChrEliza and Kizzz - let me know when you schedule your homestudy.

And, Lfor2, it would really be nice if you joined us!
