Pronounciation, meaning of name
Hi,
We adopted our daughter several years ago from S.Korea. Her name was Eun Ha, and at the time, the agency told us it was pronounced "Yoon- Ha", and they said it means blessed lotus flower. Then a couple years ago, my kids joined a hwa ran do class (martial arts, I might be spelling it wrong), and the leader said it is pronounced EEN- Ha, and means summer grace. Can anyone confirm which is right? Thanks! Julie |

The best way to determine how the name should sound it to learn how it was spelled in hangul, the Korean alphabet. The characters for the "yoon" and "een" sounds are very different. It is often difficult to translate these characters into our letters, so it sometimes gets confusing.
If you have the characters, there are many hangul guides online that will play the sounds. As far as the meaning, I think that question could be cleared up by learning the original spelling. Hope this helps. |

Just a follow-up to the last post...you probably knew about the hangul and the use of Chinese characters, etc....but given the spelling "Eun," I would strongly favor the "yoon" sound.

Hi, as rtpmom2be already stated, it's very dependent on the Hangul 'spelling' of your daughter's name.
untitled.bmp Sorry about the very basic drawings, but I'm not very tech savvy and so drew them up in Paint ha ha ha Based on a somwhat limited knowledge of Hangul characters, the first line represents "Yoon-Ha". The second line of Hangul characters represents "Eun-Ha". The "Eun" part sounds similar to the 'U' part of 'Urn', for example. I hope that helps a little!! ![]()
