Re: Corporal Punishment
This may be a rather argumentative topic so let me first say that I am NOT trying to open up a debate of any kind. However, I have some questions about the adoption process and agency views of corporal punishment. We have four biological children and really feel that there are times when a spanking is warranted. That doesn't mean it is the only form of discipline we have used, but sometimes it works better than anything else. Also it is not something that happens often and is not done in anger and by no means is abusive.
A couple of the agencies we have looked at seem to have a form that addresses corporal punishment and says that it is viewed as abuse and isn't allowed with adoptive children. Now my question is this, because we have spanked our children for misbehavior and I don't plan to lie about this to the social worker, would that be a reason for them to turn us down? Has anyone else had this to deal with or are we the only ones? ![]() |

We were never asked about spanking by our social worker, nor were there ever any documents pertaining to it.

We were asked about spanking and had to sign a document stating that we would not spank. We were not planning to spank anyway but with our agency it was a definate no-no.

We were not asked about it in our homestudy interview either. We did, however have to sign a paper stating that while the child was a ward of the agency (until finalization) we would not spank. What 1 year old needs a spanking anyhow? None I have ever met, LOL!

Some states and some agencies require you to sign a statement indicating that you will not use corporal punishment; others do not.
