Happy to Join here!

I just wanted to say how happy I am to join this thread. My husband and I are officially on the wait list for a baby from Korea. We have done a lot of research with adoptions and always seem to come back to the Korea program. Most of our family knows about the news and they are all thrilled for us. I also plan to say a little something about our adoption in our Christmas Letter this year to let our friends in on the exciting news. My husband and I are blessed with a 15 month old Bio daughter. We think she will be about 3-3 1/2 years older than her sibling which I think is great. Well, Hopefully the time will fly by for us and everybody else here in the Waiting phase. Take care.. Amanda

Welcome to the Korea Board!! We did the same thing you are doing...in our 2004 Christmas letter we announced that we are adopting from Korea. We also put in there that had accepted the referral of a boy and all the details as to when we had received his referral...one day before our 10th anniversary!!! In our 2005 Christmas letter we announced that we were adopting again from Korea and getting a girl this time.

If you need any help finding anything Korean online, just ask. I have a list of online sites that you can find Norigaes, Hanboks, Korean folk tale books, and more. Just PM me and ask for details.

Good luck with the wait!! I hope that it isn't too long for you!!!

Jen

Thank you so much everybody for the reply's. My husband did order us When you were born in Korea book. I thought about buying a copy each for of our parents for Christmas as a gift to them. I can't wait to get it in the mail to read it to our daughter.

One question. Is there a good book that I can read to our daughter about adopting a baby that is going to look different than her? She LOVES us reading to her all day long. She will actually sit on our laps and we'll read for an hour straight every evening. Also, I was wanting to buy her an Asian baby doll.. Any suggestion where to find a nice one?.. thanks, Amanda

Amanda,

Your husband got a wonderful book. We got this as a present from a friend of mine who adopted 2 girls from Korea 20+ years ago.

I'm not too sure if it'll work but what got recommended to me after we adopted our son to help us before our daughter came is a book called Toddler Two by Anastasia Suen. It has become one of our kids favorite books.

You could also try the Sesame Street one called We're Different, We're the Same as well.

I have some ideas on Asian dolls for you but have some questions and I'll PM you when I can.

Jen

Wow SPD! You are just waiting for the call... They told us at our agency it can take almost 2 years for a referral. We our hoping the time is faster but we are just taking it one day at a time. We figure when the time is right we will get the call for the right baby. Amanda

Welcome!

These are the books we have in our library (for our family and for the extended family and friends):
* We Adopted You Benjamin Koo
* When You Were Born In Korea
* My Name is Yoon
* Count Your Way Through Korea
* Korean Children's Favorite Stories
* Land of the Morning Calm
* The Green Frogs

This is a title for you and your DH...and your children (current and future) when they are much older:
* I wish for you a Beautiful Life (make sure you stock up on tissues before reading this one)

These are on my to order list:
* Over the Moon
* Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born
* Let's Talk About Adoption

I think sharing any of these with your daughter will be great in helping her to understand not only what adoption is, but also a very basic understanding of Korea.

I have a very close friend who just started their homestudy for Korea (much faster here, their baby should be home in the spring), they have a 4.5 year old daughter at home, I think the best thing for their daughter has been seeing my family grow through adoption. We gave her copies of our placement picture and updates to keep in her room, she came to the airport to great our son in February and was present at our finalization hearing in October. We have continued these practices with our second son. Bring your daughter to any events your agency is holding and get invovled with another family further along in the process so she can see/experience everything you will be doing.

Goodness! Is that because of the changes coming up next year? I have never heard anybody say they were told that long before. Hopefully it won't be that long.

I have no idea why so long. I think there is just a huge wait list. But I really do have a feeling that they over estimate the wait time. I think it will go lot faster and they just tell couples that time frame in general. We have friends that used the same agency and it did not take that long.. We'll see though.. Our agency did tell us at our last meeting that our daughter will be around 3 when the baby comes home. She is already 15 months and was 14 months old around the time of the meeting with her.

Another Colorado Mom!

Hi Amanda!

I'm assuming from your screen name that you live in Denver? My DH and I are up in the Vail area!

May I ask what agency you're using? (PM that information...don't post.) Wondering if we're using the same one? That would be cool.

Anyway...hope the process is a smooth one for you.

Best of luck,
Julia
