Finding your child when you have only begun the adoption process?
Well, after much thought and deliberation, plus meeting with several different agencies, we have decided that our child will be from Korea. It was a difficult choice, as there are so many wonderful children out there and so many different programs.
We submitted our Preliminary application on Tuesday. We should be receiving our formal application today. Here is my question: We have expressed interest in a waiting child but because we are only just begining the process,I don't know if that is very realistic. Has anyone succeeded in adopting a child that they identified when they had just begun the process? Last edited by jkovick : 06-02-2006 at 10:30 AM. Reason: sent before I titled the post |

We didn't do that, but I have heard of many such cases. I think it depends on how many other people have already expressed interest in this particular child. Also it may depend on your agency's rules. Try posting your question on the Holt board, where many parents have adopted WC

Our agency did not give info about waiting children to families until they had an approved HS. I did not inquire about kids with more serious special needs or older though - that may make a difference.

We have not yet done it the "proper" way where you are paper ready before accepting a referral. Our first child, Erick, was a waiting child and we began his adoption before we were paper ready (no homestudy, no INS, nothing at all!). Now, with Lillian, we also were not paper ready when we decided to adopt her. We're waiting on our homestudy update to come back and we're putting together the dossier right now.
I think there are a lot of families that do it this way, especially with SN adoptions. If you are considering adopting a special needs or older child, then you will likely be able to go ahead and request a specific child.
