Korean heritage

Hi everyone,

I'm stopping by from the Russia forum. We adopted our sweet son from Russia back in March. He is Russian-Korean, so I often stop by your forum to check out the posts. You all have beautiful children and I enjoy the photos. I wish you all posted more pics though!

My question to you is about Korean heritage and customs. I can also research on line, but figured this might be a great place to start. What are you doing to celebrate or acknowledge their Korean heritage? Any websites that you frequent that might give me some insight?

Thanks in advance! I've attached a photo too...hope you don't mind!

Your son is gorgeous!

Since incorporating our children's birth culture is so important, we've found a Korean-American bridgebuildling group that we've joined. This group is made up of those who left Korea as adults with their families, adoptive children, and those who have an American parent and a Korean parent. It's a great group.

There are also adoptive groups in our area, but they tend to have more Chinese adoptees than any other, so I was happy to find the other group.

Check with your local library, or look up Korean churches in your area. Either may have the resources to find a similiar group.

Some websites to check out are:
www.lifeinkorea.com
www.adoptkorea.org (has a great links page)

PM me if you have any questions.

Since I'm sure the post will be edited...I believe Red Dragonfly meant adoptkorea.com

Where are you located? Some communities with larger Korean populations have Korean culture societies that have events. Others use Korean churches. Also see if your area has adoptive parent groups (or playgroups). Sometimes talking in person to other parents is useful.

What a handsome guy!

Adoptive Families magazine has a website adoptivefamilies.com there is a list somewhere in there of herritage camps, as well as a way to search for support groups in your area.

A friend & I are starting our own play group for Korean adoptive families.(I think NY is a little far for you to travel for you, though! )

Good luck!
Millie

Thanks everyone for your replies. When I have some free time I'll check out those links.

We live in the San Francisco Bay Area - a big melting pot really. So I'm hoping we'll be able to connect up with a group of some sorts.

Thanks again!

Your little fellow is very handsome. I'm sure you are so proud!

Also, I love your avitar. Does the pug have a name? My sister in law has had two (Roofuss & Kirby).

Thanks for the compliment on both! Our pug is named Java. I go by Javalita since that is Spanish for "Little Java"...I am definitely her lessor half!!! She is quite the little character!

Korean Heritage

I'm a Korean adoptee and depending on where you adopted through...the agency might be able to help you. There is a magazine, called the Korean Quarterly out of Minneapolis that you can subscribe too as well. It gives information on Korean culture and maybe could give you an outlet to ask questions as well. Also, Holt does many Korean Heritage camps around the midwest and the northwest coast.
