Unhappy OKAY, can someone please read this and tell me how to keep from losing my mind???

Okay, I'm going to try and condense this as much as possible and make it simple.

I'm an adoptee. I live in Kentucky. On December 31st, 2003 I sent in the petition to access adoption records, which is Petiton AOC-290, to the circuit court here in Daviess County, where I live and where my adoption was finalized.

On January 8th, 2004 I got Form AOC-290.1 in the mail signed by a judge. This is the document that they send to the state office in Frankfort so that they will do the search for the birth parent. It was signed and entered on January 6th, 2004.

On or around February 22nd, 2004 I received a packet in the mail from the Cabinet for Families and Children in Frankfort. In the packet is a type written letter outlining the search process and requesting the $150 fee, as well as two articles about adoptees and reasons for searching. There is also a consent form attached that you must fill out and send back to the office if you want them to give your birth parent your infromation, i.e. name, address, phone number. I filled it out and sent it back along with a personal letter to my birth parents and a picture of me.

On April 16, 2004, I mail a $150 check to Frankfort for the search fee. The check doesn't clear my bank until ALMOST 3 weeks later.

I hear nothing else from the state until I break down and call them on June 28, 2004. I am told that Cindy Danner no longer works there and that a Barbara Carter (I THINK) is now in charge of the searches, but she is not in the office that day. So I speak with a woman by the name of Anne about my search. I apologize for calling, and she says it's perfectly okay to call. After looking through my file, she tells me that they found my birth mother and she gave consent to contact and accessing the records. She tells me nothing else about my birth mother, i.e. name...she says that they sent out an affidavit of search to the circuit court here in my town two days earlier. Then she says that once the court gets the affidavit, it will be notorized or signed by the judge, then a copy will be mailed back to the state, and to me as well, then someone from the state will contact me and give me information, and work on sending me copies of everything in my file.

Okay, all if fine and good right? NO. That was 2+ weeks ago, and I have not heard a peep from anyone. I'm tired of waiting on bureaucratic bullcrap. I've BEEN waiting...2 weeks, 6 months, 23 years for this. I don't understand what is taking so long. I'm about to call them and see what the deal is. To top it off, I'm leaving for vacation Saturday morning (July 17th) at 2am and I'll be gone for a week. So, I just know they're going to end up calling while I'm gone. I'll have a housesitter here, but still I wish they'd call me already and tell me something. I'm going nuts. When is someone going to pick up the phone and call me? And where are all the other KY people who have done this process already? Why should it take 2+ weeks for a paper to get from Frankfort to Owensboro and get signed??? Can anyone tell me if this is normal? Or should I be worried? Someone please help!!!!

Contact your courthouse and see if the information is there. I did this same thing and had to keep calling the State and the courthouse until they let me come to the courthouse and write down everything they had found.

Just so you know I was able to contact a brother and a sister and I am still searching for another brother.

Good luck.

Keep calling till they recognize your voice. Thats my only advice. Do they let your bmom know that you were searching so she can contact you also?
