I have heard & read so many conflicting requirements for single parents adopting in Kazakhstan; if you are a single and have already completed an adoption in Kaz, could you please PM me, or respond here, with your experience? I would love to know if this is a true possibility for me so I don't get too emotionally invested from the get-go only to find out that it is not a possibility.
Thanks so much! Christy |

Hi Christy,
I have not adopted yet, but my dossier is on its way. I will be a single parent too. As far as I know the rules are, you can not have any problems with a criminal past, you must be very healthy, if single you can't have any other children already, and you must be finacially able to adopt. One set of papers in your dossier states who will be the childs guardian should anything happen to you. I have also heard that Kaz does not show any discrimination to single parents. Very nice as I recently switched from Ukraine who hates single parents! Best of Luck! |

I am not single but while in Kaz in Aug- Oct. I met many adoptive single moms. Most were in ALmaty at the end of our trip at the US Embassy. My only advice that I heard them say is be sure your agency likes single moms. One lady had went a long while for her to see that her agency ( Who was VERY big in Kaz) kept giving families the referrals at the time and traveling first.
Check your agency and ask for references of single moms.

This is actually an agency requirement, not from the Kazakhstan government. |

GO for It!
I am single, and I am adopting a child. I already have a 15 year old daughter. Obviously you want to avoid an agency that tells you that you can't already have kids and still adopt from there.
I have an aquaintance who is single, who adopted her baby from there a couple of years ago and had a very positive experience. Yes, I had to sign a paper saying who would be my child's guardian if something happened to me. No big deal - my brother was there for me. When I was in Russia and adopting my daughter a couple of years ago I was asked a somewhat bizarre question by the judge. She said "If you date a man who does not like children, what will you do?" I said I would NEVER date a man who didn't like children! Culturally, Russia [an maybe Kaz too] has a prejudice against raising "other people's kids." Russian men, I've heard, will not raise another man's son. That's why there are so many more boys in the system awaiting homes. You can find lots of support in adopting as a single. There are Yahoo groups for Single Moms. You CAN do it! Good luck! Dee

Thank you
Thank you to everyone that responded to my 'single mom' questions. There is so much to learn, but the internet has proven to be a wonderful tool full of invaluable resources. |
