We stayed the whole time. My husband had the vacation time built up and was paid for the full 7 weeks (he stayed home a week after we got home). I had also saved up the 6 weeks and so I we got home on a Saturday and I started back to work the Monday after. It was hard, but I work from home so it was not too bad.
It was definately hard and you do have the option of going home after court and then only 1 of you returning for the 2nd trip. We had orginally planned my husband would go home after court and then I would stay the rest of the time. (Basially 3 more weeks after he left.) In the end we decided for him to stay the whole time too and I'm so glad he did. As a first time parent it was nice to not be alone, plus I would have been bored without him. But if we had to we would have done it that way.

We stayed the whole time as well, 35 days (we did get immediate execution). My husband telecommuted while we were in Kaz, checking emails every morning and even making a few calls. This time though he's using vacation for 3wks and then I'm returning with my sister to pick up the baby. Hope that helps!

I am going to cover this issue over at the Kazakhstan adoption blog today, http://kazakhstan.adoptionblogs.com/.
Also, there is info over there on Kazakhstan adoption basics including travel info, just FYI. You can also ask questions and suggest topics. Lori Last edited by adoptkazakhstanblog : 06-29-2006 at 06:07 AM. Reason: additional info |

We each saved up vacation, sick time, whatever we could to be able to stay for the first month without taking any unpaid time. We will both return home after court for the 3 or 4 week wait before we can bring our son home so that we can both work. I am fortunate that my company pays for parental leave for an adoption they same as a birth so since we will have legally adopted him by the second trip. I will be able to take paid leave for that trip (only a week) and then for part of the time I am going to take off after we return home. To afford the unpaid time off, we saved our bonuses from this year to use as income for the time I'm on unpaid parental leave.

Two Trips
I am adopting my son in two trips. The first trip will be 2-3 weeks, the second trip about 5-7 days, I am told. You don't have to stay there the whole time. I am adopting a 9 year old boy, so I can explain to him about coming back; with a baby it might be traumatic if mom and dad left.
I think right now some agencies also have escort services, so for trip 2 I may just go to Almaty and have my son escorted to me. My agency is awesome - PM me if you'd like more info. Dee
