I'm waiting for my homestudy to be done, in order to adopt (via legal risk foster to adopt) one or two 'older' children.

Since this board isn't very busy, I usually ask any Jewish-related questions I have on one of the Jewish email lists.

I'm an older single Mom of a Chinese daughter...

... who just happens to go to Jewish day school!

In 1997, I adopted my wonderful daughter from Xiamen, Fujian province, China. She was 18.5 mo. old then, and I was "only" 51. She is 7 now and I am 57. We are having a great time!

Becca was converted in a Conservative mikvah and named in a Reform temple. She went to a Conservative Jewish preschool. Currently, she is in second grade in a Jewish day school based on the Solomon Schechter model. The curriculum follows both the State of Israel's requirements and those of Montgomery County, Maryland. Hebrew and Judaic studies account for about 40% of the day.

Becca is not the only child of color in her class of 18 children (one of 7 second grades in the school). There is one other Chinese daughter of an older single Mom, who happens to have adopted while living in Israel; the girl speaks fluent Hebrew, as well as English. There is also an Eritrean Jewish girl whose parents immigrated from that African country, and a girl who has one Black parent and one White parent. The face of the Jewish community is, indeed, changing.

I would be delighted to talk with Jewish people who are considering international or transracial adoption.

I am amazed at how much I see color now that we are open to a transracial adoption. Our Reform temple is incredibly diverse . We have African American families, multicultural families, and families formed through transracial/cultural adoption. How does someone "look" Jewish anyway!? I know that a major issue with a transracial/cultural adoption is to be involved in a place of worship where your child can feel as part of the group and not an outsider, or a "token". How is your little one dealing with this as she gets older and knows that she isn't the "norm" (whatever that is).

You mentioned that you are in Montgomery County, MD. I am in Northern, VA. My son, who will be 4 in a few weeks was converted in a Conservative Mikvah as well. We belong to a Reform shul, and he is just finishing his first year of Sunday School. He is blond hair/blue eyes. We have several children of "color" in our shul, as well. It is such a joy to see.

Please keep posting.

Karen and Richard...

... Are you adopting domestically or internationally? It would be much easier if you let us know the type of adoption you are doing. If domestic, are you working with an agency, finding a birthmother on your own and using an attorney, or going through the foster care system? If international, what country or countries are you considering?

We have decided to go domestically. We are working with Golden Cradle. I just want to be sure that I am going about this in the right way. We are looking for an infant.

Thank you

Smile Jewish Adoption

I'm so happy to find this forum! My husband and I are just about to decide how we're going to adopt (domestic or international). I'm Jewish, he's not, but our children will be raised Jewish.

We live in the Philadelphia area -- does anyone have any recommendations for agencies/attorneys/homestudies in our area?

Thanks!

Abbe

My husband and I live in Cherry Hill. I would recomend Golden Cradle if you are in this area. We have decided to go with them.

Please feel free to respond any time.

Question re: Golden Cradle

Why did you choose Golden Cradle and what other agencies/options did you consider? Have you ever heard of an attorney named Steve Dubin??

Thanks!

Abbe
