Need some help with Jewish Name
Naming my son was very easy, but now I am faced with choosing a name for my child-to-be. Not sure at this point if it will be a boy or girl, but I will most likely be requesting a girl.
My great uncle passed away just before Nathan came home, but his name was already chosen and it was very important to me to name him for my grandfathers. The next child will be named for my uncle and my grandfather's dear friend who was like family to me. My uncle's name was Isadore William, but always went by the name Bill. I think I am ok with naming the next child with a B name for the American name, but don't know what I should do about the Jewish Name. My uncle's Jewish name was Yisroel. I don't even know the female equivalent. Would you name her with a B name or a I name? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks as always!!

There's Yisraela
feminine form of Yisrael (Israel) means "prince of God" means "contend or fight" From: http://judaism.about.com/library/3_l...s/bl_names.htm My personal favorite B name is Bayla, which I think might be Yiddish rather than Hebrew.

My daughter's hebrew name is Batia (pronounced Bat Yah). She is named after my beloved mother Barbara.

Thanks so much for your suggestions!!
I think I am going to go with Yisroela for the Hebrew name and a B name for the American name. Now for the middle name - I want to name the child for my grandfather's friend Moishe - is there a feminine form of the name? Moisha? Any other Hebrew or Yiddush names that start with M?

How about Isabella/Isabel. I now it's been really popular lately, but it's a beautiful name. You can call her Bella for short and it starts w/ the same letters as your uncle's first name.

That was a pretty inclusive list. Of those some were very old fashioned. Maayan is beautiful but a friend who named her daughter that says she has to go by Maya in the US because no one pronounces it right. My cousin's name is Maytal so I am partial to it. Has become pretty common in israel now, although it did not exist much as a name until the 70s. Michal is common but I think beautiful. I know Michals who go by Michelle in English. Moriah is also nice, although with more heavily religious overtones. I would add Meirav (pronounced May-Raav). I've always liked the name. Would get less mangled in English. If you wanted another "I" name (Israela would be very uncommon these days in modern Hebrew) there are some great "I" names. Inbal, Iris, Ilana, Irit. Iris is nice beacuse its so international. Good luck in the name game. |

Thanks everyone for all the great ideas!! I think that this child will have a Jewish first and middle name and an American first and middle name - still don't know what it will be, but then again, haven't received the referral yet ...but any day now!!
Any other ideas in English or Hebrew/Yiddish would be appreciated! Thanks again.

oops...I always forget Americans do both an American name and a Hebrew name. I wonder where that practice came from?! Being Israeli we just look for Hebrew names we like that are easily pronounced in English (and other languages if possible). You know...a name that can multitask
For better or worse--You have a lot more picking to do than we do.Ironically when we picked Jordan as a name for our son we thought it was completely international. Turns out after the fact that while its great in English and Hebrew it is NOT a name in Spanish (we were hoping since J is from Guatemala) and not in Arabic (an Arab friend in Israel had a good laugh--Urdun is a river, NOT a first name). Oh Rena,
I feel for you. We're adopting from Guatemala too. Your uncle's name could have been my son's name. He is Eric Benjamin or Issar Benyamin. I consulted a rabbi on naming both my sons after going through the books. I am having difficulty this time too, incorporating a Spanish birthname and a hebrew name to translate to an english name. I would look at the E names. Gail |

Thanks for the advice! Maybe I will contact my Rabbi on this as I still have not decided.

Rena -- I said on the other thread that I really love your daughter's name. I'm assuming it's pronounced yee-SAY-la???
Mari was one of the names I strongly considered for Xiomara. Great choice! Hope you have a speedy process.
