we had our son converted

we brought our son home at the age of 12 months and 2 weeks of age.

we contacted a mohel in our area and he was ready to perform the bris.....he said the child was still young enough to have it done the traditional way it is done with a newborn and came to our home.

when he was ready to perform the bris i made him stop......my son was screaming just laying on the table. we then found a urologist who performed the circumcision under sedation at the hospital.

a few months later we contacted a conservative rabbi in our area (we didnt' belong to a synagogue yet) and he brought us the mikvah and converted our son and gave him his jewish name and a document we would need in the future to prove he was converted when we go to join a synagogue.

Congratulations! We had to wait four months after we brought our son home from Russia, and we had it done by a Mohel who was also a pediatric urologist. It had to be done at the hospital under general anethesia, but our Rabbi will perform a special ceremony to finalize the conversion for us.

We are matched and waiting a son to be born in Aug....

so can we have his bris at the usual time and then complete the conversion (mikvah) at a later date (not too much later of course)...or does it have to be done the other way around?

Our son had his bris at 2 weeks old, when he came home from the hospital. His final piece of conversion at the mikvah was done at 5 months old. It does not have to be done at the same time. In fact our rabbi told us to wait until 5 or 6 months old.
