Making adoption from China

Hello all.

My husband and I are adopting from China and have questions about how common Asian children are in the community. We have seen Jews of every color but not any of Asian descent. We are new to Atlanta and are eyeing a reform congregation not far from the house which seems pretty open. We figure that she will be the only Asian child there. However I was wondering in a larger sense whether many of the community were adopting from China. Do any of you have any experience with this ? Anyone with a China or Korea connection ?

Thanks ! Trixie

Our congregation has a family with the sir name of Chan. The mother is Jewish for generations, her husband is from China. The children are being raised as Jews. So they may not be common, but they are out there.

I have actually been seeing more and more Asian Jews, whether they were adopted or converted as adults. Obviously, each community is different, but know that someone has to be first sometimes. We adopted our daughter - African American - through the Foster Care system - and we are Orthodox. The response from the community was amazing, and we have had many people come up and tell us that they would now think of going the route that we went having witnessed the outpouring of support from the community. Good luck!

Adopting from China

My wife and I are soon to receive a referral for a baby from China. We belong to a Reform temple in northern Virginia where several other families have children from China, Korea and Vietnam. As more Jews adopt from international countries, we are literally changing the face of Judaism which I believe is for the better.

We are DTC 11/10/06 for our daughter (from China) - and had some concerns about how she would be accepted by our synagogue. We moved about a year and a half ago to Charlotte. We have another family in our congregation who have a daughter adopted from China as well as a couple (one of whom is Chinese) whom are raising their children Jewish. We also have African American members, etc. I believe that reflective of the broader culture, our culture is changing as well. How lucky we are to be a part of a religion that is so accommodating and spiritually fulfilling. I truly hope and believe that your child will not only be accepted, but embraced by your chosen congregation.

Mazel tov!
