craniosynostosis

Hi everyone,
We are considering a referral of a special needs child, and we understand one of her health issues (a heart condition corrected with surgery) but not this one .. has anyone had experience with this? We know the medical definition but there seems to be a wide range of issues associated with it, and in some countries seems to be confused with positional head molding, which is less severe...
Thanks for any help you can give.
Franny

With true craniosynostosis there is actual premature fusion of the bones of the skull which restricts brain development and without surgery causes cognitive decline. Do you know if the child has had surgery to correct? In the cases I'm familiar with, surgery was performed immediately upon diagnosis to prevent any effect to the brain. In all 3 cases (2 were siblings) surgery was successful and all the children had normal intelligence, though the siblings did have unrelated sensorineural hearing loss. Have you discussed the medical information with a physician (yours or prospective pediatrician)?

There is a good website cappskids.org that can give specific info about craniosynostosis.

I would be happy to talk in PM further if you have specific questions.
