HIV pos Mother NEG Child

Just my questions to all that might be better educated than me in this subject.

The little girl that we are trying to bring home...her mom was HIV pos, she used drugs, drink and I guess some other stuff. Well, Thank God the baby girl has always been negative. My mom has been a little concern telling me that the virus might show up later in life. Does anyone know what are the chances?

Thanks in advance

Trn,

Please check out http://www.thebody.com for a VAST amount of information about HIV, child birth and the transmission rate.

Some of the information I found said this, "If a non-breastfed baby is negative through 6 months of age, infection is extremely unlikely. "

Depending on the situation (not beastfed), I have been told once the baby is 18 months old and continues to test negative...they are *safe.*

I can give you the name of a forum member who can help you alot...PM me and I will tell you her name...

Hello,
If you are speaking of [EDITED]in Estonia, she is HIV POSITIVE. We were going to adopt her but asked for an updated test. The results are posted on [EDITED]under her name. The october results show she is still HIV positive at age 4. We were shocked as we were about to put our paperwork in to hold her. Please make sure you send that information onto your IA specialist. I told the agency that he results mean she is positive, as well as having swollen lymph nodes, if you get a doctor to interpret that medical info. They have her listed as healthy, I guess she technically isn't sick, but she does carry the HIV virus. Sorry.

I guess it is a small world after all! :-) Yes, this is the little girl and yes we have seen the updated information. Last we know she has been negative to the virus. I had one IA doctor take a look and I was told this will be consider a high risk adoption. So far IA doc just requested us to get her measurements since birth. You could be right about her carying HIV but we decided to wait and see what the IA says. I am a bit confused because I though that HIV pos children are not allowed to leave their countries...I don't know!

Quoted from Agency "she is not an HIV carrier...so she cannot infect others...as she does not have HIV."

You can adopt HIV positive children, you just need special permission from INS.
