Belize Adoption
Hello,
Has anyone adopted from Belize or have very good information concerning the process? We have some missionary friends who have a lawyer in thier church who could orchestrate the adoption. I know very few people adopt from there. Can anyone fill me in? Thanks! Chante |

Check the State Department website first...
One thing on that website (at http://travel.state.gov/adopt) suggests that adoption by most Americans would not be feasible. It says:
"NOTE: BELIZEAN LAW PROHIBITS THE ISSUANCE OF AN ADOPTION ORDER UNLESS THE APPLICANT AND INFANT RESIDE IN BELIZE AND THE INFANT IS A BELIZEAN CITIZEN. RESIDENCE HAS BEEN DEFINED IN THE PAST AS EITHER PHYSICALLY RESIDING IN BELIZE FOR A MINIMUM OF SIX MONTHS OR POSSESSION OF BELIZEAN CITIZENSHIP." However, sometimes information on the website is a bit out of date. I would suggest that you contact the U.S. Embassy in Belize, and the Belize Embassy in the U.S. for additional information. I do not know of any agencies working in Belize, which also suggests that adoption from the country may be difficult or impossible. |
