Hi. I am just starting the adoption process. We definitely want an international adoption, and so far Russian sounds the most appealing to us. I've searched online a bit for angencies. I have found one in our area that does Russian adoptions. St. Louis and Kansas City are a few hours away from me, but there are more options there. I'm wondering if it's common to travel to agencies. How many times would I physically have to be there? Would it be worth even looking out of state? I'm just so overwhelmed by this, and I want to make sure that I choose the right agency. How do I even know if an agency is good? Thank to you anyone who can help me.

You should choose your agency on their ability to meet your needs for the country you have selected. You do not have to choose a local agency for Russia and you should look for an agency that is best suited for your situation and not limit yourself looking just local.
We live in St. Louis, our agency was in Texas, we never met in person, accept their reps in country on pick up. We worked with the agency that happened to have the best qualifications for our needs and they happened to be in another state. Your home study can be done by any local social worker that your agency approves. Yahoo groups has a group you can join for agency referrals. Just search groups, adoption agencies, and it should come up for you. Also, if you just google adoption agency reviews you will find some information as well. Good Luck!

You don't need to live near your agency at all. Most of your contact will be phone and email even if they're nearby.

Pick an agency that is accredited and don't worry about where they are...interview, ask for VERY recent referals...you can go to the Russia board and search through the agency thread at the top and check with people there who have used agencies you are interested in...be aware that many 'biggies' have closed down their programs, because they could not sustain accrediation!
