advice
My husband is 47 and I am 58. We are looking to adopt a girl under 2 years. I have done a little research and it seems that Russia, Ethiopia, Jamaica, Phillipines, Armenia and Azerbaijan will consider older couples as long as one partner is under 49.Does anyone have advice on which countries are easier in this regard and recommendations of reputable agencies that would be more sympathetic to us?We live in California.

This is really going to be an agency specific thing for you. Although the countries may accept this age difference, most agencies will have there own criteria. While I'm sure you can find options, at 58 this will be difficult for a 2 year old girl. I would suggest looking into agencies that will first accept your age and then checking their credentials after weeding out those that will not work with you.
Wishing you the best in your search!

In Russian adoption - the general rule is that the youngest parent must be within 45 years of the child's age...however, most agencies will take into consideration that the mother is older in this situation and probably somewhat 'average out' your ages. It will be tough most likely to adopt a child under 2 from Russia...it's tough for even younger people to get a child under 2 at this time (at least at the time of homecoming). I don't know much about the other countries.

check out the country guidelines on RainbowKids.com Adoption Information, Support, Child Photolistings, Articles and Resources and on Creating A Family: : Home~ -- any agency you deal with will also have their own guidelines, which may be stricter. Some agencies and countries are also more flexible in the case of children with special needs.

The Philippines would not allow you to specify gender or request a child under 2. You have to be under 45...also they no longer allow you to request gender. All the best
